Lowell Ford was a cherry grower in the 60s in Oregon. In the 1970s he took a trip to Germany and fell in love with the grape farming he saw there. When he retired in 2000 he bought the Illahe site in Dallas, Oregon, and his son Brad joined the project as winemaker in 2004. The Fords think of themselves as farmers, reflected in their choice of name for the project, “Illahe” (pronounced Ill-uh-hee), a local Chinook word meaning “earth” or “place” or “soil”; their goal is to make wine as naturally as possible, from soil to bottle. “Cuvee Miette” is a special barrel selection originally intended for the winery’s restaurant partners but subsequently made available to retailers; it is a bright and savory Pinot with firm tannins and vibrant acidity.
