The House of Angostura had its beginnings in the 1830s when Johann Siegert, a German medical doctor living in Venezuela, created aromatic bitters as a medical tincture to alleviate stomach ailments. In the 1870’s, Dr.Siegert’s three sons migrated to Trinidad, among them Don Carlos Siegert, who pioneered the brand, establishing Angostura aromatic bitters as an integral ingredient in cocktails and in food. The rest, as they say, is history. Today the House of Angostura remains a major Trinidad and Tobago company, operating as a distiller and the major producer of rum on the islands as well as the producer of Angostura bitters. And today the original bitters has been joined by a number of flavored versions, including this orange one, made with tropical oranges, herbs and spices . . . just the thing to provide a bold flavor boost to cocktails or in baking and cooking.
