Casa Mariol is two things: it is one of Barcelona’s finest vermouth bars, and it is also the producer of one of Spain’s tastiest vermouths. The Mariol family has been in the wine business for more than a century, operating out of "La Batea" a medieval town in the heart of the Terra Alta region of Catalunya. The current generation, led by Miquel Angel Vaquer and his siblings, has launched a small revolution in packaging and attitude . . . no frills all the way . . . and won major international awards in the process. Their Vermut Blanc is absolutely sui generis: it is made from a base of estate-grown Macabeu grapes with more than 150 different locally-sourced herbs and spices. It is highly aromatic, with a refreshing palate that perfectly balances sweetness and dryness.
