This branch of the Fonseca family emigrated from Portugal five generations ago, settling in the town of Atotonilco, in the highlands of Jalisco, where they became agave farmers, eventually coming to supply agave to some of the top tequila distillers of the time, both in the highlands and in the valleys. The family built their own distillery in the 1980s; it is today run by fourth- and fifth-generation agave growers and distillers Enrique and Sergio Fonseca, and Enrique is one of the largest agave landowners in all of Jalisco. Their Anejo is a blend of very old tequilas that have been aged in Nevers and Limousin oak barrels that previously held French wine; it is deep and complex, with dried fruit and spice elements like cardamom and allspice balanced out with just the right touch of sweetness.
