Based in Guadalajara, Grand Mayan Tequila was founded in 2009 by industry veteran Carlos Monsalve, who had already spent more than twenty years working in every facet of the tequila business. Today, working closely with his son Carlos Jr., he remains fully involved in 100% of the production process, from the soil testing and agave sourcing to tasting of each batch of tequila before it is carefully bottled. The result is a handcrafted produced with the purest, central-highland blue agave with the highest standards of production. Grand Mayan is especially known for its presentation in hand-crafted ceramic containers, each numbered and painted by local artists in Mexico City. But, as the Monsalve family says, “each bottle [is] a piece of artwork, but it’s what inside that is truly a masterpiece.” This Extra Anejo, aged in ex-bourbon and e-cognac barrels for between three and five years, is masterfully blended and perfectly smooth, with a long, layered finish.
