Michter’s Distillery, originally known as Bomberger’s Distillery, may at the time of its closing in 1989, have been the oldest distillery in theUnited States. The complex, located near Schaefferstown, Pennsylvania, dates from about 1840 and was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1980. It closed in 1989 after a bankruptcy filing, but since 2004 whiskeys produced in Bardstown Kentucky by Kentucky Bourbon Distillers have been sold under the Michter’s label. Michter’s Pot Still Sour Mash Whiskey is made in accordance with original sour mash tradition, using sour mash, spent mash from an older batch of whiskey, to catalyze fermentation in a new batch of whiskey; it has notes of dried fruits, herbal tea and a hint of roasted nuts and a lingering finish that has notes of roasted coffee and oak.
