Marcel Lapierre was an exciting biodynamic producer in the Beaujolais, in fact one of the founders of the natural wine movement in France. In company with three fellow winemakers in the region, he spearheaded a return to the old practices of viticulture and vinification: starting with old vines, never using synthetic herbicides or pesticides, harvesting late, rigorously sorting to remove all but the healthiest grapes, adding minimal doses of sulfur dioxide or none at all, and disdaining chaptalization. Marcel passed away at the end of the 2010 harvest, but his son Mathieu continues in his father’s footsteps. His 2008 vintage of “Raisins Gaulois” was labeled a VdP des Gaules, a broad new designation covering most of the Beaujolais and some other fringe areas; since the 2009 vintage, however, the wine has been labeled simply “Vin de France,” suggesting that the Gamay grapes used for this wine came from outside the Beaujolais region. Regardless, it is a bright, juicy, eminently quaffable red with ample acidity, the perfect choice for picnics or BBQs.
